Telling Stories or Experiences for English Teachers

For Junior and Senior High School

English teachers may get some difficulties when teaching listening materials. Most of the students don't enjoy to listen a story from a handbook that is read by teacher. Because they know that the story is from the book. It may be different if they listen to a story of the teacher's experience or their friends'. I believe that the students will have fun to learn and know others experiences. By telling one's experiences, the students' motivation will be higher.

The important thing before doing this activity is that the students have to know and understand about past tense (ex: I went .......).

Here are the steps of this activities that may take 2 meetings.

  • Share a story from your childhood/your experience (it is for sample)

  • Ask some questions orally to know students' understanding and don't forget to see students reaction about your story

  • Students write a childhood/an experience of their own for next lesson

  • Copy the stories for students to read

  • Students ask questions and make comments about the stories in groups (You can use a piece of paper at this section)
